Tour de France: Hincapie aiming for stage win

Hincapie wants to win at least one stage at the Tour this year.

George Hincapie will be heading to France for the 13th time of his career as part of the Team Columbia-High Road roster revealed Wednesday.

Hincapie, 35 on Sunday, said the team brings a diverse squad with strong options for stage victories and a shot at the top 10.

“I’d love to win another stage,” Hincapie told VeloNews. “We have a good team. We’ll have a great team for the sprinters. We have Tommy (Lovkvist) for the young rider’s jersey and we’ll have Kim (Kirchen) for the overall, so hopefully we can meet all those goals.”

As only one of four Americans expected to race this year’s edition, Hincapie will provide one of the best chances for U.S. success in the Tour.

Hincapie thinks his best opportunity for a stage victory will come in a breakaway. After he was the lone rider to be part of all seven of Lance Armstrong’s seven Tour wins, Hincapie struggled in 2006 when he made a run at the GC.

Last year, he was back in his familiar role as road captain, resulting in a narrow second in the opening prologue and a one-day run in the yellow jersey. Hincapie also won a difficult mountain stage in 2005 in the Pryénées.

“I’ll be looking to get into breakaways and attacking in some of the medium mountain stages,” Hincapie said. “I’ve felt good all season long. I had some bad luck in the classics, but I’ve been healthy and strong, so it’s been good so far. Hopefully the Tour will go well.”

Hincapie said he’s enjoyed his season so far with High Road, saying the team’s great ambiance and strong successes through the first part of the 2008 season bode well for the Tour.

“We’re not the favorites for the overall, we have lots of options of for stages and for the top GC positions as well,” he said, before adding that Cadel Evans and Alejandro Valverde looked strongest coming out of the recent Dauphiné Libéré stage race in France.

After the Tour, Hincapie is hoping for another shot at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.

“If I get selected, I’d like to go back to the Olympics,” he said. “After that, we’ll see. Probably just nationals and the Tour of Missouri, then I’m done.”

At least for this year.
