Taylor Phinney and Danny Summerhill, VeloNews magazine’s joint selection as the 2007 North American juniors of the year, each had impressive rides on European soil over the past weekend.

Phinney, the 2007 world junior time trial champion, won Saturday’s short but difficult time trial at the four-day, five-stage Pays du Vaud in Switzerland. Phinney’s winning time of 12:10 over an 8.9km course that skirted the Sarine River represents an average speed of 27.27mph and was 12.8 seconds faster than Great Britain’s Luke Rowe.

Rounding out the TT podium was race leader Moreno Moser, nephew of legendary Italian cyclist Francesco Moser, while Phinney moved into sixth overall. Former junior national road and TT champion Nick Bax was 17th, 59 seconds off Phinney’s time. Moser took the overall win following a hilly 120km final stage from Assens to Eclépens, while Phinney held onto sixth overall.

Phinney will contest the individual pursuit for the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing in August.

Summerhill, who took a silver medal at the 2007 world junior cyclocross championship, finished seventh at Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix for espoirs. The top American finisher, Summerhill finished the 180km race in the decisive break, with the same finishing time as Dutch winner Coen Vermeltfoort of the Rabobank Continental team.

Despite a late race crash, American Austin Carroll also fared well, finishing 29th, 2:16 behind the winner, against some of the best U23 riders in the world.

The USA Cycling National Development also contested the 2.13-rated Tour des Pays Haut Savoie in France from May 28-June 1, where American Kirk Carlsen used a top-10 placing in stage 2 to finish 11th overall. Max Jenkins came in 16th overall after a consistent performance throughout the three-stage race.
